How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Oil Change

Oil changes are a key part of vehicle maintenance, and it’s crucial for any driver to schedule them regularly. Exactly how often should you change your oil? How regularly you should schedule this service depends on the make, model, age, and condition of your vehicle. The ideal oil change frequency for most new vehicles is between 7,500 and 10,000 miles, and more often than that for older models. Your owner’s manual can provide a more specific interval, but we’re always happy to answer your auto service-related questions at Drive Chevrolet Buick!

Recommended Oil Change Frequency

The kind of driving you do, as well as your driving habits, can also impact oil change frequency. How often you should change your oil has a lot to do with the amount of dust and dirt that make their way into your vehicle’s oil filter and into the oil reservoir. So if you spend more time off the pavement than the average Rolla driver, you may need to schedule oil changes more frequently than the recommended oil change frequency in your owner’s manual.

You may need to up your oil change frequency if you do any of the following on a regular basis:

  • Off-roading
  • Commercial use
  • Racing
  • Heavy towing

How Often Should You Check Your Oil?

Minot drivers can benefit from learning how to check engine oil at home, rather than waiting until the next routine maintenance appointment. For instance, it’s a good idea to check your oil in between service appointments if the type of driving you do is likely to dirty your filter faster than normal. It’s also a good practice because you may discover that the oil level is low, which could indicate an oil reservoir leak.

Newer vehicles typically have an oil level indicator on the dash, so you won’t need to open up the hood to check your oil. Checking the oil is easy on older vehicles, too: just locate the oil reservoir, pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean, and then reinsert it all the way into the reservoir. Carefully pull the dipstick back out and observe how far the oil reaches. If it’s beneath the marking for “full,” you need more oil.
